Making an appointment
Once you have made the decision to terminate your pregnancy you will need to make an appointment by phoning 02 9413 2538. Allow yourself at least 10-15 minutes to make the appointment as information will be provided to you at this time regarding fasting and what to bring along to the appointment etc.
When you arrive at the clinic you will meet the counsellor who will provide an opportunity for you
to explore your feelings about the pregnancy and the alternatives
available to you in a supportive non judgemental atmosphere. Your
choice of contraception will also be discussed.
If you then decide to terminate the pregnancy a female doctor will check your medical history and confirm your pregnancy.
The operation performed at Gynaecare is vacuum aspiration under IV sedation, which is a safe, simple and modern method of early termination of pregnancy. The operation only takes approximately 15 minutes.
IV sedation (twilight sleep)
Intravenous (IV) sedation, also known as "twilight sleep" allows a women to be comfortable during the operation. A medical practitioner will administer IV sedation. The nurse will be with you throughout the procedure. The procedure will take approximately 10 - 15 minutes.
You will be required to fast, ie, NOTHING to eat or drink for 6 hours prior to your appointment.
No sips of water, no lollies, no chewing gum, no smoking.
After the operation
Following the procedure you will be sleepy for approximately 30 minutes and you will be offered some refreshments when you wake.
You will be at the clinic for 2 ½ to 3 hours
For your safety someone needs to take you home by car
You must not drive, drink alcohol or sign legal documents for 24 hours after the operation
You will need to rest for that day and preferably the next day as well
A medical certificate will be available to you if necessary
On the day of the operation
Remember to FAST for 6 hours prior to the operation
Please bring with you:
- Your first morning urine sample (a small amount in a clean jar)
- Your current medicare card
- Your blood donor card or other proof of blood group if possible
- Any ultrasound results
- Sanitary pads
- If you are 14-16 years of age you will need proof of age -a birth certificate or bus pass
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing (trackpants or a loose skirt)
- Payment is required on the day of your appointment. We accept EFTPOS, credit cards and cash.
- We do not accept paper cheques
- A friend or partner may accompany you. The presence of children in the clinic can be distressing for other clients. We ask that you arrange suitable child care on the day
We recommend you see your local doctor or return to Gynaecare for a medical check up 2 weeks after the operation
