Sexual Health
Being sexually active means that attention must be paid to protecting against unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The two most common and complex infections are chlamydia and HPV (genital wart virus). Both often have no symptoms and can give rise to long term problems. Chlamydia can cause fertility problems and pelvic pain if left untreated. Wart virus can trigger abnormalities in cervical cells leading to abnormal pap smears and progression to cancer of the cervix in severe cases if untreated.
Herpes is common and it is not possible to be screened for it routinely. Herpes can cause distressing physical and psychological disturbance for individuals and their partners. Our expert clinicians in our Sydney north shore clinic can advise and inform you about the facts of herpes infection and manage your condition appropriately.
It is important to seek early diagnosis as treatment can greatly reduce symptoms. You may benefit from preventive medication if you are experiencing frequent flare ups. It is always better, if you do experience painful genital lesions, to seek diagnosis so that any underlying condition can be managed effectively (to improve symptoms and reduce transmission.)
Condom use can dramatically reduce transmission of these infections, but if you have unprotected sexual intercourse (especially with a new or casual partner) it is best to have a screening check to protect yourself.
