COLPOSCOPY If you have had an abnormal Pap smear, you need to have a colposcopy to determine the extent of change in the cells of the cervix to accurately decide the best course of action. A colposcopy is an exanmination using a colposcope which is like binoculars that sit on a stand at the end of the examination couch. It is used to magnify and look at the cervix. A speculum is used to hold the vagina open, just like when you have a Pap smear. The colposcope does not enter the vagina. Colposcopy should not be painful but it may be uncomfortable because of the time taken to look at the cervix. At Gynaecare, colposcopies are performed in the same manner as a Pap smear without the use of stirrups.
BIOPSY If an abnormal area is seen using the colposcope, the doctor will take a biopsy using local anaesthetic. A biopsy is a very small piece of tissue usually only a few millimetres in diameter. The biopsy is sent to the pathologist for a more accurate assessment of the abnormal cells. It will take up to a week for this result and then the doctor will discuss whether you need any treatment or whether a follow up Pap smear is all that is needed. Information coming soon.
